Reason #209: Enjoy The Creeps
“To do then now would be retro. To do then then was very now-tro, if you will.“-Mark Shubb
Imagine a world, if you will, where Eric Burden fronted The Count Five and not The Animals, and you would have a pretty good idea of what Meet The Creeps sounds like. This band was from Sweden, but sounded like they were from L.A. circa 1965, and out of all of the “Children Of Nuggets” it is The Creeps, this album in particular, that sounds the most genuine.
There are organ-led, garage rockers galore, and it is all done exceptionally well. Thankfully it comes across more an homage than a direct copy. Nine catchy, original songs save it from this fate.
I bought this based on the cover back in the 1980’s, back when I was just getting to know bands like The Cramps and The Fuzztones (and the original Nuggets compilation), and this was a great addition.
No relation to, the later, Kreeps?
I really enjoyed this and it was totally new to me. Good call.
Not that I am aware of, but then again the Kreeps is a new one to me. I’ll have to look them up. Glad you enjoyed this. I heard they kind of went downhill fast after this, but this is enough for me.
LOVE your blog, Ian!! This is a great post!! Thanks!!

Thank you Vincent!
I never heard of these guys, but that song is pretty friggin cool, man.
Love the Mighty Wind quote!
DINGDINGDING!!! Kevin, I was wondering who was going to give a reference for that opening quote! You, my man, must have a fantastic sense of humor! The whole album is the same, totally great. Check out “Rattlesnake Shake” on Youtube, then buy the whole thing wherever you can find it.
I love that movie.
Have you seen the other ones? Waiting For Guffman and Best In Show are equally great, same casts. Also, the grandaddy of all mockumentaries, Spinal Tap.
Nice call Ian on being unable to place the year of origin for this track – it’s a good one regardless of when it was released!
Thanks Stephen, that’s a big part of this albums charm in general, I think.
New to me, but I’m in love with that track! Just looked up the LP on Discogs, though. Oooft.
Yeah, it’s a pricey one. Wish I still had my original…
Yes. Guffman and Best In Show are fantastic. Spinal Tap, well…what more can be said about that? They missed the mark on For Your Consideration (although O’Hara was great, again). But I have a soft spot for Mighty Wind. I can watch these movies every time they’re on!
I thought the same thing about For Your Consideration, which is why I left it out. That was a real disappointment for me. Have you seen Guest’s TV show, Family Tree? Along those same lines, and just like the movies Fred Willard steals every scene he appears in. Worth looking up if you haven’t seen it.
I’ve never heard of Family Tree, but it sounds like something I should look into. There’s another show called Schitt’s Creek with Eugene Levy and Catherine O’ Hara, but I haven’t seen that either.
E, have you ever heard of an 80’s band called The Lucy Show? They were from Canada but moved to England to start their music “career.” Excellent indie guitar rock/pop. I strongly suggest you go to Youtube and listen to “Ephemeral (This Is No Heaven).” I am almost certain you will like these guys.
The jazzy coda and the drum sound give away it’s age but it’s still pretty amazing.
Just saw this years later! I came in via The Creeps third album, which got released in America and I thought was exceptionally groovy, but I eventually worked my way back to this one and WOW! This was the ultimate Garage Soul modern album I’d ever heard. Only “The Zontar Sessions” from The Woggles comes as close to the standard here.
