Reason #288: The Kings Are Here

the kingsLet’s start with what Allmusic thinks of this one:

“”Hey Judy, get Trudy.” So begins one of the greatest two-fers in pop history. “This Beat Goes On/Switching to Glide” may not be as famous as double-A “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions,” or even “Feeling That Way/Anytime,” but it’s an exquisitely enjoyable double-shot.”

If you’re not familiar with this “double shot” of pop pleasure then you’re missing out. It’s without a doubt one of the finest songs (I can’t separate the two and will always consider them a single song, kind of like Nick Lowe’s Nutted By Reality, or any number of McCartney cut-‘n’-paste compositions) of any decade, never mind the ’80’s, right up there with Driver’s Seat by Sniff ‘n’ The Tears. It’s a new wave song with a classic rock backbone and funny as hell, especially this couplet:

Hey Judy, get Trudy,
You said to call you up if I was feelin’ moody,
Hey little Donna, ahhhh still wanna?
You said to ring you up when I was in Toronto.

Except the singer doesn’t say “Toronto”. He says, “Toranta”, which makes me smile every time I hear it. Not quite sure how these lads from Ontario Canada got Bob Freakin’ Ezrin to produce their debut, but they did and the whole bloody thing soundsĀ fantastic! Oh, and by the way, the “And More” bit on the album cover above was added for the expanded reissue a few years back.
