Reason #372 Why The ’80’s Didn’t Suck: 7
In 1981 Madness released 7 and folks, myself included, where underwhelmed. It just didn’t live up to the expectations created by the amazing ska/punk informed debut (One Step Beyond) and the poptastic songs of Absolutely. It still doesn’t match up to those 2 albums, but over the 30+ years since its release it’s gotten a lot closer! Cardiac Arrest, Shut Up, Grey Day and especially the non-album period single It Must Be Love are all very worthy songs and as good as anything they would ever do. Still ska, still goofy, but starting to..ugh..grow up a bit. They would mature even more on their next album (the career high water mark, The Rise and Fall), here they were still a party band, but with brains!
As with all of my entries on Madness, try and pick up the deluxe editions, which include videos, sessions and many worthy bonus tracks.
