Reason #419 Why The ’80’s Didn’t Suck: Sparkle In The Rain
Now that there is more than 29 years separating me from this album I can now unequivocally say that this is the very last, very good Simple Minds album. Not their best by any stretch, but very far away from being their worst. Crucially it is the album before Don’t You (Forget About Me) and The Breakfast club, and way before the God awful Belfast Child. This came after the band’s peak (New Gold Dream), and as such has been unfairly forgotten. It’s good, though; really! Picture U2, but good, and you’re half way there. Up On The Catwalk, Book Of Brilliant Things, The Kick Inside Of Me and especially Waterfront are all fantastic new wave stadium anthems, and they sounded phenomenal in an outside, mid-size arena (Canada’s Wonderland—TWICE!).
