Reason #446 Why The ’80’s Didn’t Suck: Hallelujah

While Happy Mondays didn’t mean much to me at the time of this release in the late ‘80’s, their next album, 1990’s essential Madchester release Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches remains one of  my all time favorite albums. After that landmark album came out I bought Bummed and was semi disappointed. But time has been kind to Bummed, and even though it doesn’t contain the level of production genius that Pills…had, it retains a certain hooligan rawness to it that was unique and quite thrilling back in the day. Wrote For Luck kind of foreshadowed where the band would eventually end up, but it wasn’t until they released the massively influential Hallelujah EP in 1989 that I really understood where they were coming from. Basically, here in North America, it was a compilation EP made up of the UK’s Rave On EP plus some remix singles, and it remains a freakin’ fantastic listen.
