Reason #448 Why The ’80’s Didn’t Suck: Express

Love and Rockets arose from the ashes of Goth pioneers Bauhaus, not unlike the way Joy Division morphed into New Order after singer Ian Curtis’ death. Although Love and Rockets were still kind of gothy in places, I always felt that they were much more accessible and, in my opinion, a much better band. The album that did it for me the most was Express, released in 1986. It far and away their best collection of songs. Yin and Yang and the Flower Pot Man, the title track, Kundalini Express, all in my mind and, if you were North American, the Temptations cover Ball Of Confusion, which is still one of the best cover versions I have ever heard. This is truly a psychedelic album, in the best sense of the word.
