Reason #457 Why The ’80’s Didn’t Suck: The Gift

Weirdly, by the time the Jam’s swansong The Gift was released I only owned SNAP, the great early combination, on double vinyl, and nothing else by these guys. I bought the Gift and was mildly impressed but not overly impressed. I absolutely loved Ghosts, and Precious and A Town Called Malice were pretty good, but the rest I couldn’t be bothered with. It was a little too Motown for my tastes back then, a little too sophisticated I guess. Fast forward 30 or so years and The Gift is the Jam album I listen to the most. In all reality, The Gift was kind of a trial for the Style Council, which doesn’t make it a bad record, far from it. The SC made some fantastic albums in their day.
