Reason #476 Why The ’80’s Didn’t Suck: Hairway To Steven

The Butthole Surfers had been around for a long time before this album came out in 1988, and while the earlier stuff may have been more confrontational (Rembrandt Pussyhorse and Psychic…Powerless…Another Man’s Sac) they were never funnier than on Hairway To Steven. John E. Smokes and I Saw An X-Ray Of A Girl Passing Gas are the, well, highlights (seems funny just typing it), but the album is the last gasp for these guys before they went all commercial on our collective asses. They were still pretty good, and edgy, but they were just never the same after they left Touch And Go for the majors. These guys were the true definition of punk rockers, although in hindsight it seems like a lot of the stunts were a little forced at times.
