Reason #482 Why The ’80’s Didn’t Suck: Songs Of The Free

I loved Gang Of Four. Their first 2 albums, Entertainment and Solid Gold were landmark records and are the very reason bands like Franz Ferdinand have a career today. Those albums were the template for angular post punk music, but their 3rd, this, brought in dance elements that were hinted at, but mostly absent, on those first 2. The best song on this is I Love A Man In A Uniform, but the rest of the album has more than its share of winners: Call Me Up, We Live As We Dream, Alone and It Is Not Enough are all equally fantastic efforts. While it isn’t as consistently brilliant as Entertainment, or even Solid Gold, it’s a worthy addition and the last really good album by GOF.
