Reason #492 Why The ’80’s Didn’t Suck: Power Corruption and Lies

New Order a synth-pop group? Not bloody likely. New Order were probably the most important group of the ’80’s, The Smiths included, and this album and the single Blue Monday will tell you why. PC & L is the sound of a band finding its stride, finally leaving the ghost of their former band, Joy Division, behind in the dust. Still dark, still weird (for the time) and this is the first time that Peter Hook’s grubby, dirty bass sound came to the forefront of the tunes. Age Of Consent was the ‘hit’, Your Silent Face the ‘ballad’, The Beach the dance monster, but all of the songs work cohesively to produce a perfect slab of early ’80’s greatness.
